Samveg (Sam) Saxena is a Research Scientist and Principal Investigator at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, and the Founder of MyGreenCar. At Berkeley Lab, Sam leads a team that conducts research and deploys tools to overcome technology and consumer perception barriers facing sustainable transportation. His team has developed MyGreenCar, a virtual test drive for car buyers and fleet managers. MyGreenCar compares personalized fuel costs and EV range for any driver in any car– to take much of the uncertainty out of buying clean cars. Sam’s team also developed the Vehicle-to-Grid Simulator (V2G-Sim), which earned the 2015 R&D100 Award. He leads DOE- and CEC-funded research on the integration of hydrogen, vehicle, and grid systems.

Sam earned a Ph.D in Mechanical Engineering from the University of California at Berkeley, where his research focused on developing advanced internal combustion engines. He has served as a reviewer, organizer, and editorial board member for several prestigious conferences and journals in vehicle powertrain systems. He founded a team that built a solar powered car, received Berkeley Lab’s prestigious Director’s Award recognizing success in launching impactful technologies into the marketplace, and was recognized in the Canadian House of Commons for his leadership excellence.

2017 Director’s Award for Exceptional Achievement: Technology Transfer -  April 3rd 2018

Sam Saxena’s diligence, flexibility, and intense interest in technology transfer and customer discovery have transitioned his software from the world of grid research to a consumer app that encourages EV and other fuel-efficient car purchases.

2015 R&D 100 Award -  November 17th 2015

A Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) team led by Samveg Saxena of the Energy Technologies Area’s Grid Integration Group won a 2015 R&D 100 award for developing V2G-Sim, a vehicle-to-grid simulator. The development team also included Jonathan Coignard and Jason MacDonald.

V2G-Sim quantifies energy use for plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) by the second, under various driving conditions or while charging or discharging to/from the grid. The simulator enables users to predict how each vehicle will perform with different drivers, and how each vehicle will interact with the electricity grid. Grid operators can use the tool to forecast electricity demand for a time interval during the day, and industry and policy stakeholders can use it to better understand how PEVs can draw electricity from the grid or provide power to the grid when it is needed during peak demand.
